 ABCs of Respite


The Maryland Respite Care Coalition was incorporated in the state of Maryland in June 2000. Through the direct efforts of the Coalition, the Maryland Caregiver Support Coordinating Council, now the Maryland Commission on Caregiving, was established in May 2001 to identify the needs and challenges faced by informal family caregivers for those across the lifespan.

Mission: Promote and support quality respite care that enhances and strengthens thefamily unit throughout the lifespan.

How does emergency respite work?

It works like other respite care, but the need for respite must be in the next 3 days or fewer.

  • Must be resource of last resort

How can I access emergency respite?

Requests for service will be accepted from agencies and organizations working with caregivers and recipients of care and from the community. Requests may be made to:

Who is eligible for emergency respite?

Emergency respite provides assistance for individuals with special needs, living in the community across the age and disability spectrum, in or out of their homes, by qualified care workers in order to provide relief for their families or informal caregivers.
